About Us

Welcome to the Purbeck Runners Official website!

We are based on the beautiful Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, and many of our runs take in The World Heritage Coastline.

We are a very friendly club who very much enjoy socialising together and we welcome new members & visitors to the area!

Membership is open to all, whether you live here, work here  or just love visiting the Isle of Purbeck.  We meet on Saturday and Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings.

Our prime aim is to run together and have fun. It is a great way to make new friends. We very much welcome runners of all ages and abilities from  new runners to marathon runners. We also have a fair few triathlete members who hone their running skills with us! If you are interested in starting running for the first time- please contact us so we can discuss how we can help with that.

Our whole reason for being is to encourage and promote an enjoyment of running…whether that be a 3 mile jog or a 10 mile sprint!

We meet for runs three times a week; Wednesday evening, Saturday morning and Sunday morning. On a Wednesday evening, we usually have  four or five different paced groups, offering a variety of runs – some on-road and some off-road. Group leaders post up their runs on the Forum – so have a look and see what you fancy! Following our Wednesday evening sessions some of our members like to ‘cool down’ with a  drink at a nearby pub. There is usually a group of People running on a Saturday. On weekend sessions, we meet at The Mowlem, Swanage. Saturday sessions begin at 8.00am. On Sundays, there is normally a group that meet for a trail run. This run is usually an opportunity to run a bit further – but cut off points are always on offer should you wish to have a shorter run. See below for more details.

Although we usually meet in Swanage, we also enjoy ‘out and about’ events where we meet at different places around glorious Purbeck.

We have a friendly club Championship which is based around local races, some of our members race in the Dorset League and on top of that we often have special events and social events!

We very much welcome new members of any level of ability and you a very welcome to try out the Club before joining. Please see our How To Join page for joining instructions.

Trying the Club

You are very welcome to try out the club on three occasions before joining. All we ask is that you fill out the Purbeck Runners Guest Information Form and bring it with you to your first run.

Our normal timetable is as follows:

Wednesday Night

Meet at The Centre, Swanage. Arrive for 7.00pm with Announcements & Warm ups at 7.10pm and runs set off at 7.20pm  so you must there in plenty of time to sign up with the appropriate group leader.

There is usually a choice of 4 or 5 groups; from new runners through to our top of the Dorset league runners! The groups will sometimes incorporate hill or speed work – but this will always be tailored to the abilities of the individual group. In the winter we have to stick to lit, road routes but in the summer we often make the most of our beautiful surroundings and go off road. Please note that it is essential to wear bright fluorescent clothing when running in the dark….this is for your own safety!

Saturday Morning

Meet at the Mowlem for an 8.00 am run.

These runs aren’t normally of the long variety so a good choice for those that like to get out, run and get back home before anyone notices they are gone! After the runs we meet in Fortes coffee shop for a coffee and a chat (and perhaps a toasted teacake!)

Sunday Morning

Meet at the Mowlem, unless we are at a race or having one of our ‘Out and About’ meetings (check the calendar). Runs leave at 9am so arrive in plenty of time.

Sunday is our ‘long run’ day and we will usually do a minimum of six miles and often do a lot more! Therefore please don’t choose Sunday for your first club run if you aren’t confident that you can cover that distance. There are normally opportunities to cut back if you don’t want to run as far as the planned session that day.  If you are not up to six miles yet, you are still, of course, very welcome to try the club on a Saturday or a Wednesday.

After the runs we meet in Fortes for a chat and a coffee. In the summer we often go for a paddle after our stretch and before our coffee….beats an iced bath any day!

The Sunday session is run at a sociable pace and nobody gets left behind. It’s very friendly and lots of fun. It’s always a good idea to check what’s available each week via the Forum.
