Long standing Member and Social Secretary Tish talks about her Purbeck Runners experiences:

I had done only a very small amount of running before Purbeck Runners was formed. During the summer before I had joined a small group to do short runs and a bit of outdoor circuit training. However the group had disbanded in September when the nights drew in.

I went along to the first meeting of the Purbeck Runners at the Catholic Church hall in November 2008 and remember feeling a little out of my depth as I looked around the room and saw people that I knew to be very accomplished and serious runners so it was with trepidation that I arrived at the cricket club for the inaugural run. It was a drizzly, dismal day and I was wondering what I had let myself in for. I made a beeline for the people I knew to be novices and we set off (safety in numbers). I can’t remember now where we ran – I think down to the pier and back. I just remember feeling exhilarated when we got back. Those experienced runners weren’t at all scary! In fact they were so encouraging and supportive I couldn’t wait for the next run.

I can hardly believe it, when I look back, at how we, all of us, have progressed over the last two years. I’ve gone from saying ‘No way am I going to run more than four miles’ to saying ‘Yes, bring on The Beast!’ Half marathons are now my favourite distance. The hills that used to terrify me became a challenge that I have overcome.

The support that everyone gives is phenomenal. Race days are best. I’m lucky enough (!) to always be one of the last runners in so there is always a huge reception for me when I arrive at the finish line!

Purbeck Runners has become more than being just about running. We have all made lasting friendships. Coffee at Fortes and drinks at the Crows Nest are an important part of the club runs. Members are from all walks of life and there is a wealth of experience and knowledge there, not just to do with running.

About a year ago I became a group leader on a Wednesday night. I love my little group. We are, perhaps, not the most serious runners in the club but what we lack in speed we make up for in enthusiasm and laughter. We all love the summer evening runs the best, up over the hill to Studland, a lengthy toilet stop in the village (sorry Tim!) and then try not to get lost in the woods on the way back – my group know what I mean. They all complain like mad when I tell them which hills we are going to climb but I know they love it really (honest!).

I have been a Purbeck Runner from the beginning but I like to think that new members feel they are welcome and would recommend it to anyone starting out. No need to feel you have to reach a certain level before you come along. There is something for everyone.

So there we have it – my deepest feelings about Purbeck Runners. The club is going from strength to strength and exciting things are being planned for the year to come.

UP THE BLUES AND YELLOWS – WE ARE THE BEST!
